IA and WHAT'S IN A NAME

WHAT’S IN A NAME

Having decided to try to get some of my songs heard I experimented with several different names. There were so many Sheila Camerons I felt I needed to differentiate myself in some way and for a while I used S.Casey and Sheila KC. But neither of them seemed right. And although my usual name of Sheila K Cameron was rather long for a singer I began using it.

Then, on one of his BBC Scotland programs in October 2010, Iain Anderson took up a listener’s use of my initials and referred to me as SKC. And I immediately thought that is what I should have called myself, it is so desirably brief.

So, since then I have opted for Sheila K Cameron with SKC alongside in brackets. And perhaps in time the long bit will get dropped and I’ll be left with SKC.

Some support for that possibility came in the comments below and I hope there will be more of a similar kind on the way.

Hello Music Song of the Day
for Jan. 31, 2011

Artist
: Sheila K. Cameron
Song
: Mr. Moon
Genre
: Pop – cabaret, easy listening, blues
Location: Glasgow,
Scotland
Similar artists: Billie Holliday, Shirley Bassey, Paul Simon, Judy Garland

Description: Scottish poet-songwriter pretty much takes your breath away in the first couple bars of “Mr. Moon” with a gentle cabaret blues; the easy swing, spare arrangement and especially Cameron’s enchanting and haunted alto are pretty much impossible to deny. Add to that the story behind her lyrics – the song was inspired by a neighbor’s World War II story of scraping a friend’s corpse out of an exploded tank under the moonlight, using a shovel – and you have a song that you’ll carry with you for quite a while. Meanwhile, there’s precious little information about her on the Internet, but “Mr. Moon” has gotten some plays on Iain Anderson’s BBC Radio Scotland singer-songwriters program. Enough plays, in fact, that he’s nicknamed her simply “SKC.”

P.S I thought the K was a relatively recent addition to my signature. But the image below (cropped from the back of a
